Apple is staying on the ball

Posted In: Tech by blookman

Apple has announced is revamp of its most popular product, the iPod.  They even have announced that they will discontinue one of the two iPhone models.  They will keep the one with 8 gigabytes of storage.  They are dropping the price of the iPhone some $200 dollars and it is now available for only $399.  I think the biggest news is about the iPod because it has not been changed for about two and a half years.

Chicago has been trying to get their city equipped with wi-fi for over one year now, but it looks like it will not happen. They wanted to develop an infrastructure that would be able to allow residents a cheap alternative to the internet. They have been talking with Earthlink about getting the service, but after about a year and a half of talking, Earthlink has decided that it would be too costly. Not only would a new infrastructure have to be setup, but it would be very costly for Chicago to run this kind of service. This cost would be put back on the public, which did not set well with many. Earthlink has also been studying the usage of Wi-Fi and it has fallen drastically since its inception. Not as many people use it as they used to, so it might be a waste for Chicago to setup their city with it. The one good think that has come out of this is that Chicago will be one of three cities nationwide to beta test WiMax. WiMax is just like Wi-Fi, but it can encompass a much wider range instead of the usual hundred feet or so. This will make the service much more efficient and will hopefully make residents happy and increase the usage. I wonder if any other city will try to make a massive Wi-Fi network for their residents.

There is a new iPhone hack

Posted In: Tech by blookman

Apparently there is a new Apple iPhone hack out there that does not require any disassembly of your iPhone. It is all software based and it was created by 6 software developers from different countries to figure it out. They are not named at this time, but there are reports that they have created a website and will sell the software to anyone that will pay for it. This allows people that are not with At&t to use the iPhone on other provider networks. This hack is making the deal with Apple and AT&T to fall through the cracks and it might even end early than what was negotiated before the iPhone went on sale. The internet site where you can purchase the software is www.iPhoneSIMfree.com. It has not fully been setup yet, but when they have everything in place, they will start to sell the software. I earlier posted about a hack for the iPhone, but it was a little more involved. This one can be done in under 2 minutes and all you have to do is change the SIM card. It looks like Apple’s plan to keep a hold on the market is slipping from their grasp!

Acer decides to acquire Gateway

Posted In: Tech by blookman

The computer industry is starting to heat up with the battle for placement as the top computer vendors. The Taiwan-based Acer, has just planned to purchase Gateway for a sum of about $720 million US dollars. This is a hefty sum of money, but with the acquisition, they will have a combined revenue of $15 billion a year. I think that makes up for the payment. With this purchase, Acer will move into the third spot behind HP and Dell as the top computer vendors worldwide. The crazy thing is that it knocks Lenovo out of the third spot, which it has worked very hard to achieve. Lenovo moved into the third spot after is purchased IBM’s personal computer sector and they have pushed quite hard to get their sales up. Acer will have to try and bring back the Gateway model from where it was back in the 90’s, when it was hotter than Dell. The problem with Gateway is that their products just couldn’t keep up with HP and Dell and it has since fallen far behind. With Acer’s quality marketing and branding, they might be able to bring the model’s back to where they were 12 years ago. It looks like Lenovo might have to do something quick if they want that spot back from Acer.

The iPhone used on another network?

Posted In: Tech by blookman

The Apple iPhone is a great new technological advance when it comes to cell phones and MP3 players. Everyone wants one, but in order to use it you have to have AT&T as their cell phone carrier. I would love to have an iPhone because of all its capabilities and compact size, but I do not want to change my cell phone carrier just to use it. I am sure that many other people feel the same way I do. Well, if you know how to change software and solder wires together, then you can get your iPhone to work on T-mobiles network as well.
