The Fart Heard Around the World

Famed comedienne and commentator Whoopi Goldberg was more like a whoopi cushion when she had a rather embarrassing moment during an interview with Claire Danes on ABC’s The View. It seems she farted so loudly that the microphones picked up the sound and the sound was aired.

Now anyone who has watched the show knows that Whoopi is never one to shy away from any subject, especially those that are about usual events in life and so after she farted, she just said “I think a frog just came out of there” and the audience giggled, but her co-workers seemed like they were in a bit of a shock. And we have no doubt that the wind passing heard around the world will get it’s share of complaints from those that believe such bodily noises should never be heard on TV, especially after it was shown on TMZ.

But did you know that back in the old days, people couldn’t even flush a toilet on TV because that sound was considered bad. It wasn’t until Archie Bunker of all people, on a show that tackled the issue of racism, was heard actually doing so. Since then it became more acceptable, but even then, it is a rare occurrence. In fact, when was the last time you saw or heard someone going to the bathroom on a TV show? Even those guys on long stakeouts in SVU never seem to have to use the john, despite all of the coffee. And some people wondered if Star Trek’s Enterprise even had bathrooms or had the need to eliminate our waste been done away with by the 24th century?

Whoopi had passed gas before on the show, or at least claimed to when Dr. Oz was a guest in May. They were discussing the subject and the good doctor asked if anyone had actually farted since they’d been in the studio and Goldberg raised her hand and then supposedly farted right then. Her co-star Barbara Walters practically climbed all over their guest to get away from the supposed stench while the others did a lot of fanning. Later on she said that she was just joking and never did actually fart. Even if she wasn’t kidding, who cares? People fart. Those that complain should realize that. The fact that it doesn’t happen more often is because most shows are edited before they were aired. Or they would certainly be filled with that and burps, just like happens to real people.

Good for Whoopi for doing it, taking responsibility and going on…
