Sasha Grey Reads to Children, Parents Yell

Submitted by News Guy on November 15, 2011 – 11:46 pmNo Comment

Sasha Grey, who is a porn star trying to break into more mainstream roles, decides she’s going to do something cool and read to the children, a nice kid oriented story that had nothing to do with her profession, but yet some parents are having a fit over the school allowing her to do so.

Now I’ll start by saying that I am not a parent and so perhaps I don’t understand the problem. But I do know from observing my family’s children that they do not think in the same terms as adults do because they have no point of reference for which to assess the situation presented to them. They see just see a young lady who came into read to them. They don’t see a porn star or a woman whose job is to get paid for what most people do for free. If they heard anything about her past, it was from other sources making a big deal about what she does, not the event itself. And as long as she didn’t start ripping her clothes off and doing what would clearly be illegal in front of the children, I’m at a loss of why this was so terrible. She was well dressed, friendly, and just all around someone who cared enough to spend some time encouraging kids to read. To me, she should be heralded for her compassion and generosity, not trashed because people can’t handle what she does in her professional life.

It made me wonder what would happen if she was a parent and she came to school as such. Would they ban her from events and participating in her own child’s education because they feel what she does for a living is morally wrong? Remember making adult movies is not illegal, just immoral in the eyes of some. She’s not a sex offender or a criminal regardless of how people view her. And there is no evidence that her job leads to such deviation. And so shouldn’t this lady have the same rights and every other privilege as other citizens? And to take that even further, would regular movie stars whose parts have brushed the edge of sexuality also be treated the same way? Heather Graham, for instance, is known for her steamy roles. She’s even appeared fully naked in some. Would she be scorned for reading to the kids? No. Then how is Grey any different? Because her films are a bit more graphic and don’t stop when it gets too intense?

Don’t mistake my thoughts on this issue with any sort of sympathy for low lifes that mess with children in an inappropriate manner. But I don’t see that here. All I see is a lot of perception, bias, and speculation that just because she’s in the adult industry that must make her some sort of warped deviant. But think about it. When have you heard of an adult film star that was messing with kids? It certainly wasn’t as recently as the teachers, clergy and coaches whose horrific deeds seem to be a daily occurrence in our world, if at all. To me, that makes Sasha Grey less of a danger to the children than those professions are.
