Wealthy, US Indian Couple Enslave Indonesian Women
Mahender Murlidhar Sabhani, 51, and his wife, Varsha Mahender Sabhnani, 45, are facing the possibility of 40 years in gaol. They have been found guilty on 12 charges, which include involuntary servitude, harbouring aliens and forced labour, amongst others.
Nona and Samirah arrived in the US legally in 2002 and reported being beaten with brooms, slashed with knives and made to take freezing cold showers. They were allegedly punished for misbehaviors such as sleeping late and stealing food from the dustbin. One said that she had been forced to eat several hot chilies and then her own vomit.
Defence lawyer, Jeffrey Hoffman seemed to think that the jury were taken by the ‘histrionics’ of Nona and Samirah, who also argued that the two women practiced withcraft and may well have abused themselves.
Mr & Mrs Sahnani are described as model citizens who spent much of their time abroad and that the 2 Indonesian women would have been free to leave whenever they wanted.
