Well, here’s a right to-do. Apparently, and Julian Fairfax Mayhem had yet to meet one, 8 out of 10 people wash, yes, that’s right, the word was ‘wash’, their turkeys before they cook them. This, apparently’, and we must take this as read, because the information is coming from none other than Judith Hilton who is the head of Microbiological Safety at the Foods Standards Agency, (FSA), that the food poisoning germs can linger on bench tops, dishes and utensils for days. She was quoted as saying, just before her luncheon of polony sandwiches and tea, that they had found that there were still a couple of ‘food safety clangers’ served up each year, and Turkey washing seemed to be the most common blunder. Cooking will kill those germs and disease causing agents, it seems, and one other most interesting fact was that 15,000 tonnes of Brussels sprouts were predicted to be eaten, which was the equivalent weight of 37 jumbo jets.
