Apple is staying on the ball

Posted In: Tech by blookman

Apple has announced is revamp of its most popular product, the iPod.  They even have announced that they will discontinue one of the two iPhone models.  They will keep the one with 8 gigabytes of storage.  They are dropping the price of the iPhone some $200 dollars and it is now available for only $399.  I think the biggest news is about the iPod because it has not been changed for about two and a half years.

We can agree that the war in Iraq has been tragic and many lives have been taken for not much progress, but what about the troops that have been injured.  There are many troops that have lost limbs in the war and are now trying to live with a missing arm or leg.  This is a bigger challenge for them than fighting in the war was.  Luckily for them, DARPA, or the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, has created a prototype mind-controlled prosthetic arm.  Yes, I said mind controlled.  They have made great strides this summer and have created something that can mimic 25 joint motions.  This is such an achievement because the human body’s arm can only make 30 motions.  This is by far the closest scientists have been in creating a prosthetic that will match the human body movements.

It was actually 5.17 pounds of chicken wings and by a 105 pound women.  Sonya Thomas, or “black widow” as she is known on the competitive eating circuit, downed 173 wings in only 12 minutes.  This happened during the National Buffalo wing festival in Buffalo, NY on Saturday night.  The best part about it is that she was competing with all other men that were much larger than her, most overweight and she beat them all.  Ms. Thomas ranks number 5 by the International federation of competitive eating.  This is just crazy how such a little person could handle that much food.  This is pretty much what I thought too, until I looked in to the lifestyle of competitive eaters.  Most of them that are really good are in extremely good shape.  Now you ask me, how can someone that eats 5 pounds of chicken in 12 minutes be healthy?  Well, it is simple.  Most competitive eaters do not just eat all the time and not exercise like many Americans do everyday.  They train just like it is a sport, as many people believe it is, and work very hard perfecting their chewing technique to maximize efficiency.  I figured I would share with you this crazy feat that was taken on by a very small woman!

Yeah, I know that you might not believe this, but it happened!  A crazy man that blames the law for almost everything drove a bulldozer into a Troy, New Hampshire police station on August 31st.  The man, Stanley Burt, who is 34 blames the law enforcement for everything bad that has ever happened to him.  Now, I am sure that he has something to do with it and probably hasn’t followed the laws much in his life, but driving a bulldozer into a police station!  I mean come on, that is just crazy.  I just hope that he didn’t think that he would be getting away very easily.

Chicago has been trying to get their city equipped with wi-fi for over one year now, but it looks like it will not happen. They wanted to develop an infrastructure that would be able to allow residents a cheap alternative to the internet. They have been talking with Earthlink about getting the service, but after about a year and a half of talking, Earthlink has decided that it would be too costly. Not only would a new infrastructure have to be setup, but it would be very costly for Chicago to run this kind of service. This cost would be put back on the public, which did not set well with many. Earthlink has also been studying the usage of Wi-Fi and it has fallen drastically since its inception. Not as many people use it as they used to, so it might be a waste for Chicago to setup their city with it. The one good think that has come out of this is that Chicago will be one of three cities nationwide to beta test WiMax. WiMax is just like Wi-Fi, but it can encompass a much wider range instead of the usual hundred feet or so. This will make the service much more efficient and will hopefully make residents happy and increase the usage. I wonder if any other city will try to make a massive Wi-Fi network for their residents.

Tour Cyclists have large hearts

Posted In: Sports by blookman

A study has been done with cyclists that have cycled in the Tour de France in regards to their hearts. The study found that each person had a heart 20 - 40 percent larger than the average humans. This allows them to control their oxygen flow much better and handle more blood volume in the heart. No ordinary person would have a heart just this size, but it comes about with exercise. Not just any exercise regimen would work though. A cyclist exercises almost everyday and really to the extreme in order to participate in the Tour de France. They study was done on almost all riders that have participated in the Tour past and present. The interesting thing is that they discovered that a riders heart will shrink about one quarter in size after they retire from riding. This shows that riders have to build their hearts just to be able to participate in such an event as the Tour de France. The study also found that when an athlete starts to blood-dope, then they run the risk of clot or stroke because it can make the blood too thick. It might even ruin the natural advantage the rider might have had with their abnormally large hearts to begin with.

We all know that hurricane season is in full swing and many of are trying to get ready for any potential for disaster. As many people in the states have seen the aftermaths of many named hurricanes through the years, now it is safe to say that there is another Category 5 hurricane in the waters of the Caribbean. It looks like the already flooded lands of Texas might meet the storm at around Friday or Saturday of this week. Felix has winds at about 165 miles an hour, which it 10 higher than what makes the classification of a category 5, which is the highest rating that we have.

Well, if you haven’t already heard, there was a crazy game yesterday during the opening of college football. It was the game against the Appalachian State Mountaineers and Michigan Wolverines. Now, these two teams are not even in the same class of playing…..well supposedly! The wolverines were ready to just tear apart this team because of what they have heard and how big they think that they are. Well, they were extremely wrong. If you don’t know Appalachian State (from North Carolina) is the two time defending 1-AA (now FCS) national champions. They are not to be taken lightly, but Michigan tried to and it came back to bite them in the rear.
