College Students and Credit cards

I am sure that we have all been in this situation where the credit card companies prey on innocent college students looking for credit cards. This is an issue on every college campus today and it doesn’t look like it will end anytime soon. Many college students get themselves in trouble with the credit cards offers that they receive while attending college.

I think the biggest problem is that many college students do not have the know-how to handle money and credit properly. It can be a very hard task to handle if you are not prepared to make payments on your credit cards. There has been an issue in the US where the credit card companies will go to college campuses and hand out t-shirts with every card application. The college students did the application just to get the shirt or whatever they were giving away, but do not realize that they will be getting a credit card. When the card comes in, they see their limit and the spending begins. They can get themselves into serious debt very quickly and might not be able to get themselves out. The best remedy to this situation is to get your child a credit card before they go to college and set some ground rules for it. If you teach them responsibility before they get out on their own and show them the consequences for breaking the rules with credit, then they will have a little more sense. This will also start them off right with building a good credit history.
